There is no agreement among historians that the regime was fascist. That‘s a political argument. Socialists, who wanted the „Anschluss“, say it was, to demonize their political opposition, while the broader consensus is that it was an authoritarian regime that succeeded in building the foundation for an Austrian identity in a country of citizens who previously thought of themselves as German people. It also tried to uphold Austrian independence, but failed at that in the end under the weak leadership from Schuschnigg.

One wonders how Kaiser Ville could could have conveyed with any authority, the view the common German, the Hoi polloi, in a time before polls. Did he occasionally disguise himself and wander about the country to get a feel for the real sentiment? He lived with elites, he mostly only spoke to elites, his infrequent conversations with the average subject would have been in passing and its authenticity burdened by deference.

very well laid out. but do you think enough people are listening to have any effect on resurgent anti-semitism and anti-immigrant xenophobia? I suspect that now, as then, the greater majority of people do not subscribe to the conspiracies, but, that didn't stop millions of people having to die, and large swathes of Europe, and Germany in particular, from being destroyed, to disprove the "stab in the back".

Basing on what O already knew on this topoc when the austro-ungarian empire collapsed the already aknoweledged thing was tò give any territory tò the people who were already living there as a majoroty. This was also the position of the US president: the idea that all the Peoples had the right tò selfdetrmine. As a consequence of such an internationally accepted concept, Fiume should of course have joined the bordering italian territory By making also Istria am italian territory (for the same reason discussed above,) the annection of Fiume would have not resulted in any italian city all surrounded by slavs, but Just an thin italian appendix, still connected tò the Motherland, just like Trieste is nowdays. This didnt happen and this was considered a robbery by both the italian politicians and the public opinion As this was annection had formally defided before on some international meetings wich took place before the end of the war (wich Italy won, also being the triggering nation that led to the austrian collapse and eventually the end of the war) Italians really felt tricked and betrayed. In the following decades the situation of Fiume and the betrayal of French and England became the epicenter of a new italian nationalism whilst an increasing spite toward their former western allies was growing. All this played of course a crucial part fort the upcoming fascism and It had always been at the center of nationalist, extreme right and regime's propaganda.

In my opinion, the reason why Germany lost the war is that they didn't complete their victories. Just look at the examples: 1915. occupation of Poland, Russia retreats, and instead of going for Petrograd, Germans stop near Riga. Later, they occupy Serbia, and keep going until Greek border, and there they stop. After winning at Caporetto, they could have keep going to Milan and Rome, yet they stopped near Venice. All those breakthroughs for no change in strategic situation. And what happened when the Entante had such breakthrought? Breakthrough on Sallonica front- Bulgaria surrenders. Breakthrough at the Piave river- Austria surrenders. Breakthrough at Hindenburg line- Germany surrenders. Not so often talked about, but Entante completed their wins, Germany didn't. That is why they lost.

I most certainly *can* help myself from feeling sorry for Kaiser Wilhelm. he was a most prickly, inconsiderate, overbearing, bellicose and ultimately, pointless tyrant. such character traits might have gone down okay in the 12th or 13th century, but in the 20th? no.

Currently there is so much discourse on misinformation online and how especially on the right complete falsehoods are being spread through social media. Usually this is seen as a very recent phenomenon and blamed on the people´s reliance on social media for information rather than newspapers or TV news. I think this piece of history is so interesting because it illustrates that nationalist myths and falsehoods were already spreading in much the same way more than 100 years ago, maybe social media isn´t the cause of this problem. When anxiety, fear and hate brought by social, economic and political instability reaches a level that they trump any form of rationality, the conditions are ripe for this kind of complete information anarchy to emerge.

Both sides are wrong... yes the army was betrayed, but it wasnt by jews or socialists, it was by weak Politicians and southerners. The allies wouldnt have been able to get deep into germany because of natural defenses. there could have been a much better peace if they kept fighting for a little bit longer. giving up Bavaria or everything on the western side of the rhein instead of giving up german heartlands in the east.
